Day 2 -Redlands to Indio
A picturesque desert sunrise quickly burned off at six-thirty a.m., giving way to scorching temperatures reaching 100 degrees by 9:30am! We were fortunate, however, to have been on the road by no later than 6am, and we were fortunate to have a tail-winds for a solid 20 miles leading us into palm springs. At one poing les threw out his hands and stood up on his bike and didn't have to pedal at all. Mr. Stinson, who was our tour-car driver for the day, said we were flying along at 30mph at least! Those kinds of speeds usually don't occur unless one is careening down a hill. It was an excellent ride to say the least, and when all was said and done we were checked into a motel by 12:30pm in Indio.
The idea was to beat the heat, and while we felt it by about 9:30, we were still able to push through while still feeling strong and plenty hydrated.
Mr. Stinson is in front of us here in the distance. He led us through the tricky Redlands hills and out into Beaumont and Banning.

And here is what happens when roads end...you find another way!
Ha.
This is basically our dinner: peanut butter and bread, avocado and bread, a banana each, a nectarine each, and a cup of semi-frozen veggies...and since we're writing this while we eat we'll probably eat more!
The plan for tomorrow looks like this: rising at 2:30am, riding to desert center (hopefully we'll be there by 6:30-7am), then cruising out to Blythe. We have decided that altering our sleeping schedule is a must in these kinds of temperatures. We might be able to stand riding 3 hours in the heat from about 8 am to noon, but definitely not for the whole day.
