Restin' Charleston style...

Day 30: Rest day in Charleston, WV

Church didn't begin until 11am... "Excellent!"
Obviously this meant we could gather up at least one good, full, night of sleep.  And fortunately for Les and I, this happened.  We rose around 9:45 for a GINORMOUS (giantly enormous) breakfast and a good cup of coffee.

It rained for the better part of Saturday night, and then most of Sunday, so we were fortunate to have found a place to stay both of these days, or else this might have been a cold, wet, annoyed post about how we can't wait to leave West Virginia!

At 11 we went to church.  Around 12:40 we were back at the Gilbert's for lunch and relaxation.  I know we have written about this before, but on our rest days it is incredibly odd how hungry we get.  I mean, I know we are resting and recuperating and everything, but every two hours I was ready for another GINORMOUS meal!  After lunch we read, conversed with Jerry and Jan and Alice (their granddaughter who has an incredibly vivid imagination!), played sudoku, rested more.  Jerry then took us to Kroger so we'd have rations for tomorrow's ride and then he dropped us off at Taylor Books again so we could hang in downtown for a bit before the day was over (plus I am finding that this trip is almost just as much about finding cool places to get coffee as it is about riding! and we felt we could have gotten a little more of the "vibe" from Taylor's if we went again).  But Taylor's was closed, which was not surprising even though it was only 3:30pm because apparently downtown Charleston just ain't the place to hang out.

We found an ice cream place across the street and hung out there, occasionally trading off watching the stuff while the other took a walk around for a bit.  It was a good, relaxing rest day.

Then came dinner!  How does Salmon, sauteed peppers and onions, and fruit salad sound?  It sounded incredible to me, and it tasted even better than it sounded!  Thanks Jerry and Jan!

The Gilberts have toured in New Zealand and other places together, so it was cool to hear their stories and to talk about other things also.

The night started to wind down and as heavy eyelids started in on their half of the day's shift, book reading would be over and sleep time would be happening shortly.  But not before cake and Ice cream!  Jan made chocolate cake with icing, and we had cookies and cream alongside it.  Lets just say, the heavy eyelids were put on hold for another hour as the sugar raced through our bodies and allowed for more Sudoku puzzles and conversations.

A great day off with a great family, in a great, quiet, state capital.  We couldn't have asked for it to be any more relaxing.  Thanks Jerry and Jan!

You guys are right in my neighborhood now! I grew up around Pittsburgh and you may be like 100 miles from there or less. Enjoy the rolling green hills! It's still home to me.
